Hatchet 3 (2013) is the third film of horror in the Hatchet Series. It follows the continuing adventures of Victor Crowley and his murderous rampage through Honey Island Swamp in Louisiana. Kane Hodder plays Victor Crowley and Brian Quinn is Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanderbilt plays Misty.



The main strength of the movie lies in its practical special effects. In contrast to many contemporary horror films which rely heavily on CG effects, Hatchet 3 features mostly practical makeup effect and sets--resulting in some truly horrific moments throughout the film.

The cast delivers a strong performance, with Kane Hodder being the most terrifying villain. The dialogue is hilarious and clever enough to make it feel like an 80s slasher film. (blog post) Additionally, there are some really funny moments throughout that offer some humor in the midst of the terrifying action.

Unfortunately, due to the small budget (1 million dollars), many locations were duplicates of earlier films. The boat house in Hatchet 2 was only used once and the rest of the footage feels like it's been reused from earlier films. Hatchet or Hatchet2 may feel the film is familiar.

Overall, I was impressed by Hatchet 3 even though it was very similar to previous entries in this series--it provided plenty of gory thrills and entertaining performances from its cast members.
